East Side Water Project

Background

Roadways around Canal Drive have been in rough shape for some time. As City staff contemplated repairs to the roadways, they first evaluated the condition of the underlying utilities. From that evaluation they determined that prior to the roadway being repaired the drinking water system and portions of the storm drainage system should first be replaced.

It was originally hoped that the utility and roadway work could all be completed Summer 2023. When bids for the work were evaluated Spring 2023, however, the bids received far exceeded the City's budget for the project. the City therefore decided to rebid the project and allow the work to happen during the winter months. This resulted in cost savings of nearly 50% for the project.

Why is the city doing this work?

Lindon has obtained good pricing on these projects that will save taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars by doing the work now instead of pushing it to the future. New culinary water mains and services to homes will also be more reliable and decrease the chance of future water line breaks and subsequent roadwork along these streets.

Project Description

A new water main pipeline will be constructed in the roadway. Connections of homes to the new main will also be installed. Each connection will also receive a new water meter.  Some storm drain pipelines and boxes / manholes will also be installed.

What to Expect
  • Temporary water outages will occur. Typically, residents will be notified by the contractor the morning of the shutdown. Residents should keep emergency water on hand for use during these temporary outages.
  • Sediment may appear in the water. Construction activities can sometimes disturb the existing water infrastructure, leading to temporary sediment in the water line. If residents see discoloration or sediment in the water, they should run their water in the bathtub for approximately five (5) minutes until the water runs clear. Please be reassured that the water is safe to drink. Lindon City water is chlorinated and continually tested to ensure its safety.
  • Restriction in the faucet flow (low pressure) may occur. If this happens, residents should remove the aerator, and clean the screen on their faucet(s). If, after cleaning the faucet screens, low pressure continues for more than 12-hours, residents should contact Lindon City Public Works (801-796-7954) for assistance.
  • There will be temporary impacts to residents' yards where new meter boxes will be installed. Water meter lids may not be at the correct height to match the surrounding yard when first installed. The contractor will come around in a few weeks following the installation to adjust the meters and to restore any landscaping.
  • Traffic detours, construction materials, dust, and dirt due to roadwork will occur. These will occur until early summer until the project is completed. The contractor will sweep roadways as able to help mitigate construction dust and debris throughout the project. We sincerely appreciate residents' patience with these interruptions and inconvenience

Work Phases
Work on the project is being constructed in phases, as follows:

  • Concrete infrastructure replacement (sidewalks; curbs; gutters; ADA ramps).
  • Water Main Pipeline installation (8” diameter blue pipe visible on the side of the road).
  • Water Service and Meter Installation (trench excavation across the road and front yard excavation).
  • Road Reconstruction will follow this spring, summer and fall. It may be several weeks or up to a couple of months between the time the water connections are completed and the asphalt work begins. Exposed trenches (filled with gravel/dirt) will remain for a period of time until the paving contractor gets to your neighborhood.
    • Manholes and valves will be lowered prior to road reconstruction.
    • The existing asphalt surface will be pulverized, and the road will be reconstructed.
    • Paving is scheduled to start April 1, 2024, beginning with Canal Drive, then moving to other streets that have had utility work completed.
